Chasing Calm on Lake Toya — A Day on the Water

Some days on the water remind you why you do this.
We headed out to Lake Toya this morning for a kayaking session, and the lake had other plans. The wind picked up early, sending choppy waves across the surface — not exactly the glassy, mirror-like conditions you might picture when you think of a calm volcanic lake. But that's Hokkaido. The weather writes its own rules.
We paddled hard, pushing through the chop toward Nakajima — the cluster of forested islands sitting right at the heart of the lake. And the moment we rounded into their shelter, everything changed. The wind dropped. The water flattened. The mountains reflected perfectly off the surface. It was the kind of stillness that makes the struggle to get there completely worth it.
That contrast — the wild open water and then the sudden peace of the islands — is exactly what makes Lake Toya special. You earn the calm.
Hokkaido's summer is short and brilliant. If you've been thinking about getting out on the water, now is the time. Whether it's kayaking, SUP, snorkeling, or fishing — we're out here, and we'd love to take you with us.
Come play. 🏄♀️🛶⛵️🎣
